How to make it

about 35 minuteschallengingwith help from an adult160 gsm paper

  1. Colour in the inside of the card and the cake.
  2. Cut out the card along the outer dashed line, and the cake too.
  3. Fold the card in half along the long dotted line in the middle, with the picture on the outside.
  4. From the fold, cut along the two short dashed lines through both layers at once. Don't cut past the end of the line.
  5. Fold the strip between the cuts forwards along the short dotted line and back again. That gives it a sharp crease.
  6. Open the card and push the strip inwards. Now close the card with the picture inside and press firmly. When you open it, a little step pops out.
  7. Spread glue on the grey area of the step and stick the cake on it, with the bottom exactly on the floor.
  8. Write under the cake who the card is for, or how old the birthday child is turning.
  9. The outside is still blank: draw a front on it, or glue the card inside a folded piece of coloured card.

On thick paper (160 gsm) the pop-up springs out best.
